When startups hand off their messaging before they’ve found their own voice, the results often feel off—too generic, too polished, or worse, just plain wrong. Agencies and freelancers can write well, but they can’t replicate your conviction unless you’ve shaped it first. Your brand’s story should come from the inside out—not be retrofitted by someone who hasn’t lived it.
Founders and early teams often know what they stand for, but struggle to express it clearly. So they hire help too soon, expecting clarity to come from the outside. But the best messaging isn't invented—it's unearthed. That requires introspection, not delegation.
Instead, start by drafting messy thoughts. Talk it out. Write badly. Test lines in real conversations. Refine as you go. Once you’ve clarified your beliefs, voice, and tone, only then bring in a strategist or writer to sharpen—not define—it.
Outsourcing can absolutely work—but only after you’ve owned the first draft. Otherwise, you risk launching a voice that sounds like everyone else’s—and fails to resonate with the people who matter most. When you skip the step of defining your own voice, you hand creative control to people who weren’t in the room when the product was built. That disconnect shows—especially to your earliest users and most invested supporters.
They can sense when the words don’t match the work. Strong messaging isn’t just about clever phrases; it’s about emotional alignment. The best copy feels like it belongs to the team behind the product. It reflects their thinking, their values, and their journey.
So before you brief a freelancer or agency, brief yourself. What do you believe? What are you against? What makes your approach different—even if it’s not louder? Once you can answer those, the outside help becomes a multiplier, not a replacement.
Build the foundation first. Then invite others to help you build higher.
